How to Setup VPN on your Android! (Access Netflix/Pandora Outside U.S.)

Many people have asked me in the past about how to setup a VPN (Virtual Private Network) to do various things like accessing Netflix/Pandora outside the U.S., installing apps on Play Store only available to U.S., and making their internet traffic encrypted and anonymized.  Whatever the case, I had the first hand experience to test out VPN outside the U.S. recently in my vacation to Thailand, which is a great test spot as it’s located on the other side of the earth (actually it’s located between the sun and earth).

Whether you need to anonymize your Bittorrent app, access websites from countries where its blocked, or simply want to exercise your right to privacy online, you can do so easily using any VPN services.  Now, there are many free VPN services but I don’t recommend them unless you are doing light web browsing as they are very crowded and speeds are abysmally slow.  Especially if you need to stream large amount of content like watching Netflix (which is my primary reason for using VPN), you may want to get a reliable VPN service.

One of the best VPN services I have tried that gives you very good speeds is ibVPN.  Since VPN routes your internet traffic through a VPN server, you want to make sure you use a VPN service that has fast download/upload speeds.  ibVPN is really fast and I was able to get full 100Mbps download and 20Mbps upload speeds on my home Business Comcast service (which is rated for exactly that).  This is important since you don’t want your VPN to be the bottleneck and slow you down otherwise VPN may be unusable.

You can use any other VPN service but make sure you check the speeds before committing to your purchase.

ibVPN is really simple to setup.  First, sign up for the service on their site here.  They also give you free 6 hours to test out their service before you buy and no credit card required.

Once signed up, simply download the ibVPN Android app on the Play Store.  (They also provide free apps for iOS, PC, and Mac so you can use it on all of your devices.)

Next, simply open up the app and use your login/password to log in.  Once logged in, choose the server location you want (I chose Los Angeles but you can choose any location) and hit “Connect”.

Once connected, all of your internet traffic on your Android device gets routed through ibVPN’s servers in the USA. (They also have servers in several other countries like UK, Japan, and many more if you are from another country.)

Once that’s done you should now be able to access all of your U.S. apps like Pandora or Netflix from anywhere in the world.  All of your internet traffic is also now encrypted so whenever you are using your Android device in vulnerable areas with open WiFi, you can be reassured that hackers cannot get your personal information by snooping.

That’s pretty much it!
