Hey this is an exciting day for me, the LG G Flex 2 I ordered on eBay is finally here. This is the world’s first smartphone with Qualcomm’s latest Snapdragon 810 Octa-core processor and also the world’s curviest phone.
This particular version is the original Korean model, which has additional features like LTE-A, DMB TV, and Korean localized bloatware, all of which won’t work here in the U.S. If you do get this particular Korean model, you can still get HSPA+ data fine on AT&T or T-Mobile, just LTE will not work as the LTE frequencies are different. So, let’s unbox this baby, huh!
Upon opening the box, you will find a sexy, curved 5.5-inch display. Last year when the Flex 1 came out, I wasn’t really sure about curved screens. But have you noticed how your local theater’s screen is curved? Well, at least mine is. After seeing a gazillion curved screens at CES 2015 last month, I do believe it finally makes sense to me. Think of it this way, the earth is not flat, your eyes are not flat, in fact, your eyes will see things better and naturally with curved screens, it’s science godammit!
Okay, onto the rest of the unboxing, inside the box you will also find sexy, curved earbuds with tangle-free rope wires. Yes, even the earbuds are curved, pretty cool, I should have a full review of these also.
LG Flex 2 also comes with LG’s first fast charge adapter rated at 5V 1.8A for normal charge and 9V at 1.67A for fast charge. The specs are actually nearly identical to the Note 4 fast charge adapter, I should have a detailed analysis on this too.
The Flex 2 comes with a removable cover along with microSD card slot, microSIM slot, and the battery is actually not removable. But no worries, I will find a way to replace the battery in my future disassembly video.
How big is the Flex 2? The Flex 2 is a bit taller and wider than the LG G3, it’s a bit shorter and narrower than Note 4. You can safely say it’s somewhat between the two devices.
In the hands, the Flex 2 definitely feels like a large phone. It is definitely not a one-handed device, it’s in the phablet class along with Note 4, LG G3, OnePlus One, etc…etc…
Compared to other “flat” devices, the Flex 2 actually fits in your hand better because it’s curved just like your hand is when you hold a phone. So, in reality this is a pretty genius idea.
Playing games and reading websites are more in tune with your eyes also, especially in landscape mode, it’s like having a curved TV on your phone. Wait, it IS a mini curved-TV on your phone.
The Flex 2 ships with latest Android 5.0.1 Lollipop and a UI that’s not as bloated like Samsung TouchWiz, one of the reasons I really liked my G3. It’s zippy and going to give you a great pure Google experience along with an excellent camera.
The LG Flex 2 also comes with 13MP laser-focus camera, just like its younger brother LG G3, which in my opinion is one of the best still cameras on the market. I do really love the new LG laser-focus camera and it’s one reason I still have heart for my LG G3.
What’s missing with the Flex 2?
Well, the 1080P screen isn’t exactly up to par with 1440P screens that’s been flooding the market. But that could be due to the fact that curved screens are a lot more harder to manufacture. I am not complaining though, there’s still not many apps that support beyond 1080P other than YouTube plus you will get much better battery life/performance with a 1080P screen.
Overall, LG Flex 2 isn’t a sophisticated all-out shebang smartphone but it’s a simple yet elegant sexy phone that’s gonna let you have a great viewing experience with its curved screen, excellent camera abilities with the laser-focus, and give you the power of latest Qualcomm Snapdragon Octo-core processor.
For now, I am pretty satisfied with my purchase but I will have a full review on this soon.
