In my last camera low-light shootout, the Nexus 6P came out on top of all 2016 flagship smartphones like the Galaxy S7/S7 Edge and HTC 10 and I wanted to find out exactly what’s going on. Was it the big sensor size? Perhaps good camera software? Or was it simply because better HDR mode? In order to satisfy my thirst to find out why Nexus 6P outperformed new phones, I did a dynamic range test. What is dynamic range?
Category: Galaxy S7
In this low-light camera shootout, we took on the Samsung Galaxy S7 Edge vs. Nexus 6P vs. HTC 10 at the local street market in Thailand.
Apparently, the HTC 10 still has the same focusing problems in low light we noticed in our last camera test. The Nexus 6P came out as surprising winner in low-light being able to capture higher dynamic range keeping the highlights from blowing out, which happened almost on every photo for the Galaxy S7 Edge and HTC 10. However, we did notice that the Galaxy S7 Edge and HTC 10 did a lot better when a subject was involved while the Nexus 6P kept focusing on the background.
In this extreme low light camera test, we take on the Samsung Galaxy S7 Edge vs. LG G5 vs. HTC 10 taking it around the busy night streets in Nimmanhaemin district of Chiang Mai, Thailand.
What we learned from this camera test is that all of these smartphones do pretty well in extreme low light and the differences are very minor. In low light, the HTC 10 seems to have focusing problems as we had hard time focusing in many of these shots. Because of that, many of the shots from HTC 10 came out out of focus while its camera is plenty capable.
I want to start this review out by focusing on what I like most then pointing out problems and things you may want to consider when buying them. What’s Great about the Galaxy S7 and S7 Edge?
First of all, both Galaxy S7 & S7 Edge feature IP68 water resistant rating which is probably the coolest feature. In fact, what’s amazing is that these phones can survive harshest conditions, even surviving a full wash cycle in my LG washer and actually being froze in my freezer, you can check out those videos on my channel. Okay, maybe this isn’t a feature you may be interested in but if it is, may be you live in Seattle where it rains often or you like to play with water often, this could potentially be the reason to buy a Galaxy S7 or S7 Edge. Think of all the possibilities, you can use your phone in the rain, record videos underwater, watch youtube videos in the shower, etc…etc…
In this EXTREME benchmark test, we take up the Samsung Galaxy S7(Exynos) vs. LG G5 vs. S7 Edge(Qualcomm) running the Antutu benchmark multiple times to see which one can outperform in extreme stress/heat to the phone.
What we found was very interesting. While the Galaxy S7 and S7 Edge outperformed the LG G5 in the first few benchmark tests with lower temperatures, the LG G5 came back and ran the benchmarks more stable and solid with lower temps nearing the end of the test.
Perhaps the best low-light camera on a smartphone before the Galaxy S7 launch was the Nexus 6P, which boasts a whopping 1.55 microns sensor size to give you excellent details in low light. In this test, we took up the Galaxy S7 versus the Nexus 6P, comparing both videos and photos to see which one had better low light performance.
In our part 1 of Galaxy S7 Edge vs. LG G5 camera comparison, Galaxy S7 Edge proved to do much better in low light with photos while LG G5 did provide an extra wide-angle lens. In this camera comparison, we took up the Galaxy S7 Edge vs. LG G5 testing out their video recording abilities.
In this camera comparison, we take up the latest Samsung Galaxy S7 Edge against the LG G5 comparing photos in various different situations including low-light and macro.
Through this test, I learned that the Galaxy S7 Edge fairs a bit better in low-light situations and also picking up more details in shadows. But what I also learned is that LG G5 is no slouch either, doing fairly well in keeping up with the S7 Edge in most situations. In fact, the LG G5 also offers a second wide-angle camera, which can come in handy for giving you some excellent landscape photos.
If you want that premium leather feel on your brand, new Galaxy S7 or S7 Edge, you may want to consider Caseology Envoy cases. At first glance, I did not know it’s leather nor do I appreciate leather cases much but after spending a few days with it, I really fell in love with it.
One of the coolest cases you can get for the Samsung Galaxy S7 or S7 Edge are the Samsung official S-View Flip and LED wallet covers. I have been using these ever since the Galaxy Note 4 days and if you want 100% full protection of your phone against drops and full coverage of the screen, these are going to do a much better job than any other screen protector/tempered glass.
