Probably the coolest software feature on the Samsung Galaxy S4 is the Group Play app that allows you to turn multiple Galaxy S4 smartphones into instant stereo, surround-sound speakers and play multi-player games.

This uses Wifi Direct technology to connect multiple Galaxy S4s to share photos, music, and play multi-player games.

Very easy to setup (just setup a password, that’s it), Group Play is the most overlooked software feature and also the most obvious feature that no other smartphone manufacturer has thought of adding before Samsung did it. (And we hope Apple does not blatantly copy and sue of course, like they did with Android notification bars.)

Does it work?

Yes, it works well.  The stereo, surround speaker is my favorite (as I do own 4 Galaxy S4s atm) and it’s going to be a great way to setup an instant stereo boombox when I go camping or perhaps just chillin’ in my kitchen.

Before trying, I was afraid there would be any “lag” in the sound but surprisingly it works flawless, the sound is perfectly synchronized and stereo surround effect is as good as you can imagine.  And of course, it doesn’t stop there, you can add as many phones to create even 8-speaker surround sound system.

As for gaming, Group Play seems like a great way to play some Poker or Black Jack (as I often do with my friends when we hang out), I think this is definitely one feature that is better than anything else on the market right now.

Fortunately, this Group Play feature is a software feature, meaning those of you with Galaxy Note 2 or Galaxy S3 should be getting it with Android 4.2.2 Jelly Bean updates.

And also for older Galaxy S2 or Note users, you should be able to get it easily with custom ROMs in the near future.

What do you think, is this feature useful or just a gimmick?  You decide.
