How to Get Free Wifi Tether on Rooted Android! [AT&T, T-Mobile, Sprint, Verizon]

America is probably one of the best places to live in my opinion (why I live here) but also worst place to get wifi tether working, especially on the four major carriers like AT&T, T-Mobile, Sprint, and Verizon.

Most countries around the world other than the U.S. have free WiFi Tether included as part of your data plan, meaning you do not have to worry about locked WiFi Tether hotspot.

Because the internet you use on WiFi Tether is basically the same internet you already paid for.  There’s currently no laws in the U.S. protecting consumers from such abuse of tethering charges by carriers (there should be one in the future) BUT there’s always a way around it to unlock your WiFi Tether on rooted Android smartphones and tablets.

Before we begin, you must have a rooted Android device.  This method should work on any native WiFi Tether that’s been locked on carriers like AT&T, T-Mobile, Sprint, or Verizon.  Also may work for other carriers, it doesn’t hurt to try!

This app has been confirmed working on many Android phones including:

  • Galaxy S5, Galaxy S4, Galaxy S3
  • Galaxy Note 3, Galaxy Note 2
  • Moto X
  • Droid Maxx
  • Droid Ultra

Step 1. Download Xposed Installer and Xposed XTether APK files.

Download Xposed Installer APK

Download Xposed XTether APK

Step 2. Install both APK files.  You may have to check “Unknown Sources” ON under Settings->Security.

Step 3. Once both apps installed, open Xposed Installer app then press “Framework”.

howto-get-free-wifitether-rooted-android-4Step 4. Hit “Install/Update”.  This will install Xposed Framework.  You can also uninstall it later down the road when you don’t need it anymore if you want.

Step 4. Make sure you hit “Grant” or “Allow” when Superuser request window pops up!

Step 5. Hit “Cancel” when installation is done.  Do not reboot yet!

Step 6. Go to “Modules” in Xposed Installer app.

Step 7. Make sure Moto Tether is checked ON.  This is actually the XTether app.

Step 8. Once rebooted, try turning on your Wifi Tether Mobile Hotspot.  It should now be working without annoying messages from your carrier!  Congratulations!

Just a side note, this will unlock your Wifi Tether/ Mobile Hotspot but your data is still counted under whatever data plan you have (unless you have grandfathered unlimited data).

Q: It’s not working for me!
A: Try the universal wifi tether method instead.

Thank you very much Max Lee!
I had my phone rooted and then followed your instructions after much searching in other places. Open AT&T Galaxy S4 sgh-i537 kit kat 4.4.2 build number ending in NH3. Now i can use even the AT&T supplied hotspot app to turn my app on. After all they made the native notifications button unavailable in this phone.

    what to plz help me

    • mauricio says:

You have to have a good enough connection in order to not have download errors. I suggest going to a place with good wireless, connecting via wireless with your phone and then downloading the files. I suffered a lot because of bad parsings created by my 3G and 4G connections.

I get a “parsing” error when trying to install X tether in this process. I am on Android 4.1.2 XDA has this same method but says it is for versions 4.4+ Could that be why I am getting the parsing error? Not compatible with less than 4.4.

        • G man says:

Bro I would hold on, if towel root doesnt work maybe your best option is to hold on till there is a stable method, on the other hand there are people that say you can do it by down grading the modem, honestly for me that is too much steps, and most of the times the wi fi gets messed up and has issues, give it some time and hopefully you will have a stable option

    >There’s currently no laws in the U.S. protecting consumers from such abuse of tethering charges by carriers (there should be one in the future)

It’s easy to say that we need to pass a law for everything that we don’t like, but the fact is that the US mobile broadband market is the envy of the world precisely because we don’t do that. You are ten times more likely to have 4G/LTE in the US vs in Europe, and we pay almost half the price per minute/megabyte of usage that they do.

  77. Rudeboy says:

I had tethering working for the last three weeks and I tried to fix another problem by entering the ##72786# when I was instructed by a sprint customer care person and the code modified something on my phone. To get tethering working, I had to add “tether_dun_required” with a value of 0 in order to make the tether work. I see that the changes by Sprint set the value back to 1 and when I set the value by to 0 and reboot the phone the value is set back to 1. How do I stop having “tether_dun_required” set back to 1?

    Hey Max,
I have a Galaxy S5 on Sprint, Android version 4.4.2. It is rooted with Towel Root. I had the TrevE Mod WiFi Tether app installed on my phone for the past six months or so. After playing with it for several hours and systematically checking/unchecking all the options, I finally got it to work. It was quirky (such as it would only work if my phone was not charging – if my phone was plugged into the wall charger, it would kick the tether off). Nevertheless, it worked, and I was happy. About a month ago, it just stopped working. Probably a security update or something. I tried the Xtether app as you suggested, and it would not work. I am desperate to get my WiFi tethering working… any suggestions? (on a side note, I just went out of town on a business trip yesterday, and my hotel wanted to charge $12 per night for internet access. I bit the bullet and signed up for the $20 per months from Sprint to get my WiFi tethering to work, but I would love to cancel it and tell Sprint to take a flying leap). Can you help???

i got Att galaxy s4 active i537. kitkat kernel date aug 29 2014. Rooted using KINGROOT. Not KingOroot. kingoroot on pc failed. I used KINGROOT without PC. It rooted. I backedup using NANDROIDBAckup. Removed devlix cache. Removed Tetheringapplications.apk tetherisngsupport.apk using Tigerbackup. Still the problem remained.
So I tried this Exposedinstaller. It worked well after rebooting. Thank you. it should root do not worry. Root it first using KINGROOT for android. towelroot failed. geohot failed to root.

Seems to be working fine on my verizon gs4 4.4.2/NK1 with unlimited data.. Have been working on getting this capability for a while. Thanks so much. Question, once I sign onto the hotspot with another device, the mac address of that device shows up in fox )as you would expect). However, at the same time a second mac address pops up (2c:44:01:c3:63:1a) and I have no idea what it is. Doesn’t seem to be associated with any other devices. Before I installed your fix, if I tried to disallow that connection in wifi, I lost the hot spot. vow? Any ideas?
Thanks again for your great assistance!
