Google Daydream View VR Unboxing!

As someone who has tested out Gear VR, HTC Vive, and even Google’s earlier beta tests of Daydream View VR, I was curious what Google has brought to the table.   Most of all, I wondered if the Daydream View VR would be able to compete against what is out now already.

Shaped like “half of a pill”, literally, Daydream VR’s main controller is a fascinating device as it has an on-board touchpad along with Volume, Power, and App buttons to give you easy navigation while using Daydream.   Most surprisingly of all, the controller is also a 3-axis controller that allows you to grab, throw things or even use it as an air mouse.  While Samsung has failed to give its Gear VR another dimension for control, Google has packaged its 3-axis controller in a damn small package.  This is a HUGE improvement over HTC Vive’s controllers, which require extra sensors to achieve the same thing.  Of course, you can’t walk around like HTC Vive yet but it should be possible in the future with updates.

As for the actual VR unit, Daydream VR has soft, fuzzy design along with soft, breathable materials to make your VR experience more comfortable.  The VR unit also can accept smartphones of different sizes easily as it is a universal fit with a mini bungee cord to secure everything.  I found that it was pretty comfortable to wear and didn’t fog up like my Gear VR, which required use of anti-fog spray.  Resolution is crisp, clear.  In my opinion, it looks much less pixelated than both Gear VR and HTC Vive.

If you own a Google Pixel smartphone, this is definitely a must-have accessory as it will give you Google’s latest and best virtual reality that is really one of the highlights of Pixel.  It is currently only available on Pixel phones but you should be able to use it on any Android device soon through some hacking (we should have a tutorial on that soon).

Overall, I am impressed at Daydream VR for what is Google first ever attempt at virtual reality headset that works seamlessly with Android operating system.   We should have a full review soon but if you have a Pixel already this is a MUST HAVE.
