LG G5 Unboxing!

lgg5-unboxing

Although I have played with the LG G5 over a month ago at MWC 2016, it was great to actually get one for daily driving finally.  Of course, this is a retail T-Mobile unit I bought, which is identical to all the GSM models out there.

My first impressions?

I know many have complained about the design starting with the G5 launch at MWC 2016 but for me, that wasn’t a real concern as I was more interested in its modular features, super wide-angle camera, and the stuff that’s out of ordinary.

But yes, the LG G5 that I got did have some design flaws like the metallic paint used on the back of the phone did have some areas that weren’t 100% smooth.   I think this is a manufacturing issue and the new process LG is using to create this aluminum alloy may be at fault.  If this is a big issue for you, you may want to just go ahead with another smartphone like the Galaxy S7 or S7 Edge.

Aside from its design imperfections, the LG G5 is full of features, perhaps more “new” features like its modular design.  The battery compartment is modular and you can replace with current line of DAC/camera modules.  Of course, the big selling point of LG G5 is that LG will continue to make more modules customers can buy later on to add more features.  One such feature I would like to see are speaker modules, SSD modules, 360 camera modules, etc…etc…  Usually you buy a new smartphone and you are stuck with its original features for the next 12 months until you upgrade.  With these modular phones, you have the option to add more modules even months after its release, the beauty of LG G5.

LG G5 is not the perfect phone by any means but I don’t think its design flaws should take away from what its core features do.  I should have a full review of this bad boy after I use it for another few weeks but for right now, I think LG has done a terrific job of introducing world’s first modular smartphone.  And if you don’t like it, you can always wait for their second version, which should be more polished with bugs squashed.  This definitely isn’t a polished phone yet but a new type of smartphone that may revolutionize how we use our phones.

They’ve already announced a 360 camera for it, as part of ‘LG Friends’ – I’m not sure how it works with the phone though. Doesn’t look like it plugs into the module slot…
