For those of you who are thinking about getting a more rugged and water-proof smartphone for either taking photos/videos while swimming or for industrial work, Galaxy S4 Active is certainly a great choice as it’s rated for IP67, a bit higher than Xperia Z (which has IP57).

Certainly, the Galaxy S4 Active is one of the best smartphones that you can get while being able to be submerged in water (up to 1 meter) for 30 minutes straight.

So, what is different from regular Galaxy S4?

Galaxy S4 Active is nearly identical to the regular Galaxy S4, features pretty much everything including removable battery, microSD card slot except the S4 Active comes with a TFT LCD instead of AMOLED screen (supposed to be better for water-proofing) and features 8 mega-pixel instead of 13 mega-pixel back camera. Other than those, they are exactly the same phone.

Also, the Galaxy S4 Active features “Aqua” mode for camera, specifically designed for underwater adventures.

Overall, I am pretty satisfied with my new purchase and there are lots of places that my new S4 Active can go (where my regular S4 can’t) such as Songkran festival (water festival where people usually put their smartphones in an air-tight ziplock bag to protect against water).

Probably the coolest thing about the Active S4 is the fact that you can use your phone in the shower and it’s really easy to clean! I actually just use regular dish soap and clean it along with my old dishes, that is way too cool.

As for availability in the U.S., Galaxy S4 Active is only available currently with AT&T. However, there may be a way to activate AWS bands on this AT&T S4 Active, just like a regular S4.
